Grew up in SW London, left home to train as a classical musician at Royal Northern College of Music (Manchester), then completed a Geography degree at Manchester University and a Masters degree at Liverpool University.

Started as a volunteer for the Big Issue, supporting vendors and then worked with homeless young people and street runaways in Manchester for 10 years before moving to Lancashire to run accommodation projects for homeless young people.

Member of National Youth Orchestra whilst at school, and regular orienteering and cross country competitor in London and the South East.

Started cycling ('cross and mtb) in 1989 only to 'retire' in 1993 to pursue rock climbing before starting riding again in 2006.

Married with 4 children and a wife who 'tolerates' my tubular gluing habit and muddy bikes. Just.
