11 Speed Alfine Out Now

Update 6th October 2010: Hubs have been delayed

Despite our best efforts, the demand for these hubs has been incredible; we've been on the phone to Shimano everyday trying to secure stock of these. But Shimano won't commit to a date. We're going to put the bikes back up as soon as possible, so make sure you sign up to our newsletter at the top of the page for an update on when the hubs are due.

Shimano's brand new 11 speed Alfine hub is been released,  Pre-reviews suggest that it is vastly improved over the 8 speed and up there in quality with Rohloff's legendary Speedhub that is the choice of so many round the world cycle adventurers.

The Alfine hub unit has been completely re-designed with gear ratios widened by 100% and weight slimmed down (it's now 120g lighter than the Rohloff). Most importantly 11 speed Alfine hubs now feature oil bath internal gearing, which should mean that servicing is much more simple and needed 3 times less frequently.

Hi Neil, yes, maybe, but Pompetamine is disc only I'm afraid. Alfine is 135mm axle width so it won't fit in a road frame. Best bet is definitely Pompetamine disc: http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/CBOOPOMPALF11PRO/on-one-pompetamine-alfine-11-speed. It's £1199 but a fantastic bike and with our C2W schemes you can pay the extra no hassle...

  • Neil Scott

Hi, is it possible to have a build with the 11speed Alfine on a cross-bike frame (like the On-One Pompetamine) for under £1000 for bike2work? If cantilever brakes were specced not discs would this make it acheivable? Thanks for your help,

  • JonB (On One Team)

We can take and process you voucher against any bike- whether available or not- just let us know.

  • Neil MacMillan

I see Madison are still selling them on their website. Wiggle have a stock date of 'the end of January',is this when the are likely? I have a cyclescheme voucher which has about 45 days left on it for a pompetamine alfine 11 comp, will i be able to pre-order if they have not arrived by this time?

  • Tod Guest

Sorry - not complaining at you guys - I know your limited by the distributors, just can't wait to switch my ageing unsuitable slow 'converted' mountain bike for the uber commuter! Cheers!

  • JonB (On One Team)

Hi Todd. Sincere apologies, we're as much in the dark as you are... We are chasing the Shimano distributors regularly- rest assured we'll get them as soon as they do become available.

  • Tod Guest

Where are they? Not that I'm starting to get impatient or anything....

  • Malersh

The moment you get the 11spd with Versas in a Pompetamine I'll buy it. Not fussed for the belt drive tho.

  • MattLynn

+1 for Belt drive 11-speed Pompetamine comp!

  • danielh (On One Team)

Yes the 11 speed are disc centrelock compatible.

  • tomj

that hub seems to have a rather vital disk mount missing - they are disk hubs ren't they....?

  • JonB (On One Team)

Yes, there's no reason why Alfine can't be used on any 135mm drop out frame. If it's a single speed frame you may not have cable guides for the gears but zip ties will do the trick... As for wheel building, it's the same as building any wheels- you need to find the right length spokes and build the wheel properly- best left to a professional or experienced wheel builder.

  • J Els

Will the 11-speed work on my singlespeed On-One 29'er frame? I am sure that it's 135mm. Should be easy to build into a wheel!!! ???

  • ColmB

I need a inbred with this set up, would be great for our shitty weather.

  • dean alba

Thanks JonB, it seems like I want all the bits that arent quite out yet. thanks for the update on the whippet Dean

  • JonB (On One Team)

Hey Dean. There's definitely a lot of call for belt drive. I'll see what I can do... As for Whippets, they're at the paint shop right now, due to be back here October 17th.

  • JonB (On One Team)

Yes! JAD. Alfine was originally conceived as a MTB gear system and would be brilliant on a 456 frame (it's a 135mm wide axle).

  • JAD

Is this strong enough to build into a mountain bike? I'm considering equipment for a very long tour, and this would seem ideal to pair with the 456 frame rather than the Pompetamine for overall durability.

  • dean alba

Please on one do a belt drive frame. I would be willing to pay £100 on top for a belt drive option. Oh, and where's my Whippet? keep up the good work

  • JonB (On One Team)

Hi Graeme. The problem we have we belt drive is that our designer, Steve Olsen, really doesn't like it. At all. You could email [email protected] with your ideas if you like? Quite a lot of people have been asking about belt drive so I'll have a word too.

  • JonB (On One Team)

Hi there GK. We want a drop bar 11 speed as much as you do but a present there are currently no levers available. I understand that Versa are working on one but that it is a few months off production yet.

  • GraemeT

Any chance of a belt drive version?

  • GK

Do you know of any plans to bring out a drop bar shifter for this hub? If the answer is yes I'll be at the front of the queue for a Pompetamine Versa with it

  • JonB (On One Team)

Hi Matt, I've checked with the Shimano distributors and there is no way of swapping the 8-speed hub internals for the 11 speed. You'd have to re-build the wheel around the new hub I'm afraid.

  • Daniel

Hi there, is it possible to order a pompetamine 11 speed but to send you my current 8 speed wheel to swap over hubs. So i end with 1 pomp with my old 8 speed hub and 1 11 speed wheel made with my old rim. Hope that makes sense! Daniel

  • Matt Litterini

Can a 8-speed Alfine be swapped out with an 11-speed Alfine? If so, would this switch be labor intensive or require special adapters and/or bushings? I have a Scott Sub 10 with an Alfine 8-speed which is adequate, but if this 11-speed is head and shoulders above it, I'm going for the switch if possible.

  • JRA

Any plans to put on of these on a 29er? I'd be more interested in that than a commute bike.

  • JonB (On One Team)

Hi Tim. Currently stocks of 11 speed Alfine are limited so we can only offering it on bike builds I'm afraid. In the near future we do hope to do a 26 inch wheelset with Alfine. We'll keep you posted.

  • TimL

Hi, is it possible to pre-order this hub built into a 26" rim? Tim
