Steel City Downhill

Steel City Downhill

This Saturday sees the second biggest cycling event to hit Sheffield this year - the Steel City Downhill! It usually doesn't have competition from the Tour de France, but if you're into mountain biking, it stacks up pretty well anyway.

It's the fourth year that the event has been run, and it always attracts a good contingency of DH stars. The last three events have been won by Steve Peat himself, and this year has Josh “Ratboy” Bryceland, Sam Dale and Eddie Masters taking part as well. Steel City also sees one of the largest field of female competitors ever to compete in UK downhill, including Adele Croxton-Peat (Mrs Peaty), who is coming out of retirement for the event. It's also wildly popular among amateurs and local riders - the 300 entries for this year's main race sold out in 9 minutes! All this makes for great watching, and over 2000 spectators are expected to descend on Grenoside Woods to see it for themselves

Run as a charity race, all profits from the event are put back in to the woods to improve the trail network for all mountain bikers to enjoy year round. Each year there's a fancy dress theme: last year coincided with Star Wars Day (May the 4th) and had fancy dress to match. This year's theme is 'Sheffield Legends', with a prize for the best costume. The trails have been built and designed by Peaty himself and Planet X employees who scoped it out last weekend say that it looking flowy and fast but still with some tricky technical sections that might catch rider off-guard.

Planet X and On-One will be present at the event itself too. Our Enduro team will be riding their On-One Codeines, we'll have a stand in the expo area and we'll be giving away some prizes. We're also auctioning off an On-One bike on Ebay to raise some more money for Grenoside trail building. Just make an offer on the Ebay page and if it's the highest, you'll get your choice of a 45650B, Inbred 29er or 456 Evo2!

Lots of us will also be in the audience cheering on the competitors, so we'll see you there! Here's some footage of last year's antics to whet your appetite:
