These bikes are an evolution for us - 18 months ago the single speed Pompino's evolved to create the 8 speed Pompetamine, which opened our eyes to the potential of Shimano's new hub gear system. Alfine offered a low maintenance, simple and effective gear shifting set-up that worked well in all conditions. We liked the "does what it says on the tin" honesty, so why did it take us over a year to get the same kit onto our MTB's?

Sometimes it's hard to change the record. Hardtails with hub gears ARE a bit strange. Only a handful of companies dare to go there- but the more we thought about it, sealing all your gear gubbens safely away makes perfect sense. There is no front mech to sluggishly drag a chain where it doesn't want to go. No dangly bits to smash off. No chain slapping around. No slipped gears. Plus, there's the ability to change gear smoothly under pressure. Or to change gear at standstill. And above all your moving parts are nicely sealed out of mud's reach. Easy. So, as we rode our Pompetamines around, there was this niggling feeling that we were missing something pretty obvious…

And then after an excruciating wait Shimano released an 11 speed system that had a much wider gear ratio, faster shifting, oil bath mechanics and a smoother ride. A couple of On-One riders put Alfine on their Carbon 456's, Ti 456's and Whippets. It worked well and looked great...

We built up a Whippet with Alfine 8, took that to Sibillini Mountains in Italy for a couple of weeks and came back glowing (not just from the sunburn). It worked. And a few weeks later the first batch of Carbon Whippet Alfine bikes (available now from just £999) emerged to rapturous applause from a whole load of people liking the idea of doing things differently.

We'd like to think that Alfine, if not the future of MTB, is a worthy contender for the title of "best alternative gearing system in ages". If you're someone who wants to keep it simple and clean- or if you're looking for a low maintenance super reliable hardtail- well, we think you've come to the right place.

Lads, put a longer stem, some narrow bars, some fattish road tyres and a bigger front ring on that same inbred-with-carbon-fork-and-alfine-hub and you have a fabulous medium-distance commuter -- that's what I did. 40km a day, nearly as fast as doing on my (planet x) road bike and much comfier
