Twentynine Inches Report

Last weekend the On-One team played host to twentynineinches' European correspondent c_g. We went riding 3 days in a row- Dalby on Friday, a wild Peaks circuit (including a mental descent of Jabob's Ladder) on Saturday and Llandegla on Sunday. There was good riding, good craic and plenty of mud- a great escape from the office and a chance to brush up on our German too....

This was also our opportunity to get our fleet of prototype 29ers out on the trail and have an independent 29er conosseur rag them through their paces. The wild bunch were: Carbon 29er Race, Carbon 29er "Lurcher", XC Ti 29er, Long Travel Ti 29er, Scandal 29er (names TBC). Rather unfairly the excellent Inbred 29er was left in the garage (no room in Stevo's car...)

Full, unbiased test details of all the test bikes (along with stories from the trails) are available at twentynineinches.com. Just type in "On-One" into the main search window. In depth reviews on each bike are being published every few days. Here's the long awaited current update on all things 29er related- availablility, price and the nitty gritty (names and graphics tbc)...

On-One 29er Products Full Update:

The Bikes:

1: Ti 29er XC 29er Short Travel:

After several months back on the drawing board our classic titanium tall boy has lost weight, tweaked geometry and now incorporates the swapout system. It is about to loose further weight and get swapouts and lighter tubesets to make it as light as possible- a true cross country race winner. Being produced by Van Nicholas and due for delivery April 2011 in all sizes. Price £799. A long time in development but well worth it.

On-One Ti 29er Short Travel

2: Ti 29er Long Travel:

Perversely it was this bike that held up the Ti XC 29er as Stevo developed a long travel specific 29er geometry that is now the stable but responsive big wheeled monster we'd always hoped for. The LT travel frame takes on the hard hitting all-rounder trail centre duties with a stiff front end, tapered headset and the ability to take up to 140mm travel 29er forks. Also fixed for delivery in April 2011 at a target price of £899.

On-One Ti 29er Long Travel

3: Carbon 29er Race:

A featherweight 1.2kg pure bred, available early 2011. Although slightly heavier than the unpainted, untested production sample that came in under 1000g, this bike has been crashed, thrashed and abused in development and passed CEN testing with flying colours. It's currently undergoing a paint and decal tweak and we plan to hit the production button to allow pre orders in January for 18" (other sizes to follow), with delivery February 2011 at an RRP of £799.

On-One Carbon 29er Race

4: Carbon 29er "Lurcher":

the Whippet's larger brother- a light, raceable but affordable carbon 29er frame equipped with swap-outs for single speed options, with a target price of £499. Check the review at twentynineinches and read why the Lurcher is nearly up there with it's pricier bother. Expected availability 18" February, other sizes April 2011.

On-One Carbon 29er Lurcher

5: Scandal 29er:

The award winning MBR "Best 29er Hardtail" of 2010 is in stock now, with more stock arriving December. In 2011 the Scandal will undergo a full makeover, becoming swap-out compatible and outing some cool new colours (TBC) and graphics by Summer 2011.

On-One Scandal 29er

6: Inbred 29er:

MBR's "Best Value 29er" steel 29er frame is in stock now in orange. The 3rd generation frames are in development, and will also incorporate swapouts. New colours TBC, available in all sizes April 2011. Although not tested here the Inbred 29er has become one of or most loved 29er frames and at only £164.99 it's a total bargain. Just check out the Readers Rides

The Forks:

1: Rigid Superlight Carbon Forks (450mm A to C, 38mm rake)

This product seems to have generated the most Internet excitement ever - but its been on our website since March - scroll your pointer to the top right corner... there it is in Stevo's sketch book! Geometry, rake, axle to crown and weight is perfectly matched to our Carbon 29er Race frame and availability February 2011. Price £200-£300.

2: Rigid Carbon Forks (450mm A to C, 45mm rake)

Lightweight rigid carbon fork compatible with all of our 29er frames. Also works well on 26 inch too. Available in a variety of drop-out options. Still on the drawing board, availability end of March 2011, price TBC.

1:The Wheels:

29er Wheels:

3 options here. Our lightweight 28 hole 29er carbon rims will be renamed "TubeLess", available as a factory build only and incorporate a non drilled rim requiring no rim tape. Tipping the scales at just 370g, these rims are trail ready and much hardier than their - factory built wheelset based around our trick 120 pawl hubs. We did our maths and found that against traditional tyres and tubes we could save 400g of rotational weight: (-100g rim tape-200g inner tube -300g (min of 150g each). Non UST tyres +200g (100ml each wheel) = 400g. Available end January 2011, RRP £699. Pre-order before Christmas!

The sister rim is a 32h conventional drilled carbon rim that's tubeless ready, which although it has 32 holes drilled into it requires a stronger bridge, as a result tipping the weight to 400g. These will be available in the same timescale as a rim only at RRP £200 each, factory build and custom wheel build price £TBC. Available March 2011.

The 3rd option is a factory built lightweight alloy wheelset built onto the same trick 120 pawl rear hub and our bulb front. Available February 2011, price £TBC

Hi Compagnoni, I think we're probably covered for Carbon 29ers I reckon, with out Carbon 29er race and our Lurcher Carbon 29er. As for Scandium, who knows, it's a difficult and expensive material to work with. Long Travel Ti 29er will be a while I'm afraid. We're getting futher samples sent over shortly with a few tweaks in order to get the weight down whilst still passing CEN.

Hi Balloon, the Lurcher uses Unidirectional High Modulous Carbon. We've yet to have its colours signed off, but will come in a few different colours. The singlespeed swapouts are simple rear-facing slotted drop-outs, as we feel these are more versatile than other systems not-to-mention lighter.

Hi Marco. Which bike are you referring to here? The Carbon 29ers have the same tested geometry as our existing Scandal 29er- so you'd be looking at a head angle of 72 degrees on an 18 inch frame with fully extended 100mm forks. Hope that helps.

We based the geometry around the Scandal, "corrected" it for the 450 A-C forks. This will also work with well a 80mm XC Fork. The Samples are arriving soon and we are expecting it to be lighter than the previous Ti 29er. Tubing is plain gauge titanium.

Rotationally 2.4 on a 29er is like a 2.5++ on a 26inch MTB With a 432mm Rear, it is a compromise with CS and BB flex.
