MORE LUU LED INFO added by STEVO... LEDs are the future and are getting brighter and brighter. The Technical Features on this LED are: • 4.5 Hour Run time on Full Power • 8 Hour Run time on “power-save” mode. • 5 hour Charge time • Lithium-Ion Battery with charge indicator led. LED torch or Proper LED Engineering solution? The Torch Vs Dedicated MTB light debate has been on the forums for a long time. I have tried it myself. However I will go into more technical detail to explain some pitfalls that LED torches encounter. We chose LUU only after thermal testing and comparing it to the MTB market. LED Luminaire Basics 101: LED’s do NOT like HEAT... LED’s will keep drawing power (current) to generate LIGHT and by-product of HEAT. Batteries also generate heat! All Heat will in-turn shortens LED life. There are 3 ways to reduce heat build up: Engineering the correct type of “driver circuit”. The LUU LED does this by monitoring the current and junction temperature (Tj) on the LED. Not ALL LED manufacturers do this... Dissipate the heat with passive heat-sinks. Aluminium is the best material for this. Separate the battery from the LED. Torches do not have the Battery separate and have to rely on the other 2 methods to keep the LED Tj low. The other area to increase performance is through using optically efficient lenses or reflectors. LUU uses an optically clear grade of PMMA acrylic. LUU also uses refractor lenses to create the SPOT and FLOOD patterns. Spot is excellent for on the helmet or as a second light. Flood is excellent for general trail coverage. To my knowledge no other manufacturer has an LED luminaire that is as adaptable as the LUU LED AND NOW for almost full “Lighting Geek” technical talk... You will need to understand the following Lighting terms all found on Wikipedia: Lumens = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumens Lumens measures the output of luminous flux expected from the LED emitter chip ONLY. This does NOT take reflector or Lens design into account. Note: DO NOT look into an LED to judge the brightness. You will blind yourself. Lux = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lux Lux measurements are more useful, however you have to measure in a dark room at a set distance. I hope this has been “illuminating”....there will be more to come.

just like to say - went for a night ride last night, first time to use the LUU's. 11/10. used the spot fitting, fitted on my helmet. you really cant ask for more. having used other lights, like the cat eye 3 spot, the brightness and distance it reaches is outstanding. was doing some techy dh/singletrak stuff, and some more open fast (good thing at night is that you can use the walkers paths without hitting anyone!)stuff and felt confident riding with these bad boys..one word - impressed.

I usually run any light under the bars. This avoids knees or obsticals knocking them... They are rain-proof with the rubber seals etc.. LEDs ican take knocks and are more robust than Metal Halide.... hence MHI are dissappearing from the MTBing :-)

Wow - I got mine yesterday and took them out with me at 0530 when I cycled my dog. They're really top notch. Prior to this I had 2 200l Dinotte lights and the LUU is a big step up. Fantastic broad beam which shoots a good way down the trail. I could cycle fast down a rough forrestry road as if it were day. Mounting is top notch and holds the lights securely in place. Can't wait to get them out on some propper mountain bike trails!

Any chance of a head harness? I'm looking at getting an mtb light that i can use for night fellrunning too, and was about to buy the Hope Vision 2. This looks a better deal but is no use to me if i cant strap it on my own head instead of a helmet!!

dave

17 September 2009

yes we can ship to usa , of course you can wear it on helmet too comes with frame bag , battery at moment is 4 cell lithium, stevo can give all the tech spec cos hes the expert 2 cells option is coming next week dave

16 September 2009

I want one soooo baaaad! Can I get it in the USA? It absolutely has to be green! Could I put one on my helmet too?

paul

Any info on the battery, e.g Volts, Amp Hours. Does it come with a frame bag or other means of attaching it to your bike.

dave

15 September 2009

The LUU Lighting website (http://www.luu-lighting.com) shows the LUU with a silver body and a red lens surround. Will this option be available from On-One? Cheers

There are "O" rings on the front bezel. The front lense is flat and compressed the seal. The Narrow / Wide and Med Lenses go behind that. There are 2 Modes : Steady and Flash. Each Mode has 3 settings to extend the battery life.

Simon

14 September 2009

Does the light have a flashing mode in addition to low/med/high?

bungee

14 September 2009

How waterproof are these lights? I've got concerns about the fact that the front lens is replaceable, and would want to be reassured about the warranty on these in case this leads to water ingress and/or they didn't survive the occasional soaking!

dave

14 September 2009

here is the story with battery life - Run time of AA battery : high mode --------------------------about 40 minutes (normal Alkaline battery) medium mode --------------------about 1 hr 10 minutes low mode----------------------------about 2 hours Run time of Rechargeable NIMH(4 cell 2700 mA,1.2V): high mode--------------------about 1 hr 30 minutes medium mode--------------about 2 hrs 30minutes low mode---------------------about 4 hours AA battery program and lithium battery plans are totally different. Above run time is not cut-off time. Lithium battery maintains certain bright level and turns off.(gives signals) But AA battery(alkaline or rechargeable nimh)maintains about 60% certain bright level. The brightness of AA battery will get dimmer as the life of regular AA diminishes. Actual burn time is about twice the above time. But the light will get dimmer and dimmer towards the end of the battery life.

14 September 2009

What's the weight for the light / battery combo? I was going to splash the cash on some USE Exposure lights, but these seem to be the business. And beamshots would be good too in the absence of any forum / mag reviews...

Stevo

14 September 2009

It is more important to thermally manage the LEDs off the back of the LED Emmitter (inside the LUU LED). LUU went further and made the whole LED body CNC. I also mentioned other methods like thermally protected with the “driver circuit”... There is also the fact that MTBers go fast cooling the back part of the Aluminium body :-)

craig

14 September 2009

I find it interesting that the description bigs up the thermal properties of aluminium as a heatsink but in the picture it appears that the light is then shoved in a big plastic sleeping bag to make sure it stays nice and warm :o)

Any chance of some beam shots - even of the pre-production sample you have??

DaveC

14 September 2009

Can't see it being much more than an hour at full power on AA batterys. With a P7 LED drawing 2.8A and needing close to 4v, the batteries will supply 4.8v and I think you can get them rated at close to 3Ah now. So, allowing for some inefficiency in the driver you'll be looking at about 1 hour. Medium power is probably quite sufficient for most terrain though so that will extend it. The point is though you can carry more batterys.

dave

13 September 2009

should be 2-3

Paul

13 September 2009

Do you know approximately how long the 4xAA screw in Battery pack would last (i know it depends on the battery manufacturer used but are we talking an hour or 2-3?

dave

12 September 2009

looks like theres something a bit strange with chain reaction / nukeprrof bringing out a very similar light , were going to find out if luu are producing the nukeproof , we suspect so , the main differential appears to be a slightly modified back end so that the LUU has the added feature of being able to take the CNC AA Battery case that you carry as a spare and can screw into the back in times of emergency . the difference is that the luu light we are selling is a much better specced light and pound for pound , certainly at 199 pounds an obviously better deal, the cost price of the "extreme package" which is the same spec / package as nukeproof is 20% less than the p"remium multi package we offer" extreme package - retails 249 pounds chain reaction - Full CNC Frame (Only Headlight), Handlebar Mount, Helmet Mount, Li-Ion Battery Pack (4-cell), Extension Wire, Smart Charger, Include Medium Filter Premium Multi Package- - preorder 199 pounds on-one - Full CNC Frame (Only Headlight), Handlebar Mount, Helmet Mount, Li-Ion Battery Pack (4-cell), Extension Wire, Smart Charger, Include Medium Filter PLUS Full CNC Frame AA Battery Case and Multi Filter Set (3pieces) (by the way that 75 pounds worth of extras)

More Pictures tomorrow!.... is that a subtle hint to remind me to bring them back then? Been out again tonight with SL1 and Luu on the bars switching between the 2 and Luu is a big step brighter.

Stevo

10 September 2009

The Price will be £199 next week...and until they come in to On-One HQ... I will be taking more pictures tomorrow and putting more information on the pre-order section...

dave

10 September 2009

these lights are the dogs danglies they use li-ion and rechargeables come in a full kit , by far the best light weve ever seen

Stevo

10 September 2009

All of this info will be on our site by Monday... This offer is NOT on the Planet X site, as I want to save this offer for MTBers initially. It is Li-Ion battery and this (pictured) screw on 4x AA battery back-up pack.. Cheers Stevo

NightRider

10 September 2009

Any more details available on these? Size, modes, battery type and run time (I'm assuming it has a LI-ION battery, if so it is integrated like Exposure lights?), charger included? Also any plans to put pics up with the different beam patterns?
